– Karen Leng Wayfaring Strangers: Ladies of the Canyon I think that track is still the most scratched on my vinyl copy. I loved producer Steve Fisk's hypnotic space jam 'Untitled' too. Nirvana's early 'Spank Thru' is a highlight. Lots of the bands (Soundgarden, Mudhoney) became leading lights in the grunge scene. I discovered the raw indie of Beat Happening and the psychedelic '60s sprawl of Screaming Trees, amongst other obscure delights. The bands on Sub Pop 200 defined the early sound of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest scene and it was very diverse. The artwork by Charles Burns perfectly captured the punk energy of the music. I found it in my local record store as a mysterious black vinyl box set. This compilation was like the Holy Grail of grunge for me in 1988. It encouraged me to learn more about the artists behind the samples. It's also simply a great compilation for listening. This double CD was not only excellent as a reference, it was a major step off point for me.
